Chinese Drywall

Following is a list of do’s and don’ts if you suspect contaminated Chinese Drywall:

DON’T:

  • Assume it is CCD if you see one or two discolored copper items in your building
  • Rely on “do-it-yourself” test kits
  • Hire a building contractor or remediation company to perform inspection or testing
  • Hire a home inspection company to inspect for something that is a potential safety and health hazard

DO:

  • Keep a log of all health symptoms (date, who, symptom) you believe is related to teh drywall
  • Hire an experienced Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Have drywall samples analyzed only by a laboratory accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association
  • Verify the CIH has experience inspecting and testing for CCD
  • When removing verified CCD, hire a contractor that has experience with removing and handling drywall while containing all dust
  • After CCD is removed, hire a licensed electrician to thoroughly inspect exposed parts of the electrical service system
  • If you expect to recover costs associated with the inspection and removal of CCD, give notice to your insurance company and any other entity you may seek recovery from before evidence is removed
